Today I am thinking coats. Also, having typed the word a lot, am thinking what a weird word it actually is. Coat. Coat. Coat. Coat. Coat. Hmmm.
Anyway, would you believe that I only used to have one? It was black, it was from Asda, it cost about £20. Not that any of those things are necessarily bad - it was a good coat, just not very interesting. This is it (back in the fatter days, obviously...):
I seem to have developed quite the collection over the past year. It's probably very modest by a lot of people's standards but considering that I used to be restricted to just the one, it feels like a lot to me!
There's the Monsoon one that I sort of regret buying because it was expensive and I've only worn it twice. So pretty though...
And the super bargainous H&M jacket (£10 in the sale) which I love to bits:
I hereby share with you my top tip for coat purchasing: stalk ebay in the summer. There might not be as many winter coats listed but because not many people are thinking that far ahead, there will be fewer bidders and you will get bargains. I'm far too tight to spend a fortune every year on a coat - the ASOS and Topshop ones might look lovely but the prices make my eyes water. Unless it's going to last years and - let's face it, they never do - I'm not going to spend a lot on it (Um, Monsoon coat shall be the exception. I was under shopping pressure that day).
This H&M coat was about a fiver off ebay and still had the tags in:
Another H&M coat that came off ebay. This is the closest thing to a mac you'll ever see me in; I don't like flasher type coats.
So that's the bases covered really. Red coat, green coat, lightweight coats, frivolous velvet coat, work fleece, sensible waterproof Regatta coat and a whole heap of jackets (should probably do a separate post on them at some point).
The only thing lacking was a smartish dark coat. I know I was in need of one but as you've probably realised by now, I get very bored shopping for sensible basics. So when the lovely people at Very got in touch, I went "Yoicks!" and chose this very pretty herringbone coat with velvet trim and buttons. Even better, it came in petite as well as normal so I didn't have the usual hassle of flappy long sleeves. Super cute, yes?

ReplyDeleteLove your new Very coat, looks great on you. I used to be a 1 coat sort of person too, more seemed frivolous! I have a vintage fur as well as a normal wool coat now.. I have to say though that as well as Ebay, Asda does have some quite nice coats in for under £30! xx

ReplyDeleteHmm, I was about to buy myself a silly red duffle coat for the winter but now I'm wondering about something more frock-coaty and Dickensian (that's what your Very coat brings to mind, hope that's a compliment!) I have the opposite problem of always having to buy a size bigger so that I don't get cold wrists. Have you ever compared the size of the Petite section in shops to the Tall? Not fair. (Probably not worth their while to add extra fabric to sell items for the same price, but if they're making them smaller that's a nice little saving. I'm onto them.)

Such a pretty coat, and incredibly flattering, your waist looks teeny tiny lovely. Not saying it isn't, just the coat makes it look even more so. :)

The Very coat is indeed a very flattering shape.
ReplyDeleteI now have several coats and jackets, whereas I only ever used to have one winter coat, which I wore until it fell apart. I think it stems from childhood, when you got bought your school uniform, including a coat, in September, and it had to last you all year, or longer...

It IS a weird word! Coat. Hehe. Yes well, you still have a considerably more extensive collection than I do - 3 in total, one of which I've worn out, the other which I reserve for warmer days (rare, very rare...) and a black primark one. Yours are definatley more lovelier; especially the most recent edition - gorgeous!

ReplyDeleteOoooh love the new addition. I'm not a massive fan of having too many coats, I prefer layers with jackets. But presently I have one lovely black military style wool coat which I bought from H&M- hello reduced due to missing button. And an olive coloured mac from Matalan that was reduced (never worked out why) to a third of it's original price. I can't bear to have coats that I can only wear for smart or casual and can't bear spending a fortune on them either so those are my two basics.

ReplyDeleteI shouldn't have a lot of coats and jackets because I live in the tropics and wearing one would get me tons of iffy stares BUT I always end up buying one at the summer sales when they are about 75% off rack price. There's been four hurricanes in the last two months so my faux Barbour Topshop coat is getting some mileage at least.
